Android NFC smartphones to rule 2012 onwards according to Informa

Android NFC smartphones to rule 2012 and onwards according to Informa Telecoms and Media report 630 million NFC handsets to drive transactions worth US$71 billion by 2015

NFC smartphone sales are set to sky rocket this next year to a dizzying 630 million handsets according to Informa Telecoms and Media’s latest report. The tipping point is here, the surge is coming, the equilibrium has been broken and we are racing towards critical mass. Everyone run for the hills, take no prisoners and do not ask what your mobile network operator can do for you, ask what you can do for your MNO. We could probably think of more cliche phrases to add, but the point is “research people, we know, we get it, it’s okay, chill out, sit down, have a bagel.” For those who don’t know, with the availability of NFC smartphones and choices in handsets is becoming an everyday event, and since Google released its Google Wallet, and Microsoft showed how they would support NFC in Windows 8, NFC has become a big topic across industries. Sure enough, hot off the heels of announcements like this we see the first trickles of the coming avalanche of analysts reports that predict everything from the world is doomed to we will all have NFC embedded in our ear lobes by this time next year. We guess it keeps them out of trouble and in many ways research analysts are our modern day prophets.

NFC Forum seeks roommate or RF Analog Test Tool Validation Services test house

The NFC Forum is looking to add the next piece in the pie of its certification program that will hit the limelight next year. Having a certified NFC Forum product obviously comes with its benefits, but the NFC Forum is looking to add more in-depth testing abilities to its certification process. As such the NFC Forum is looking for RFPs to Select RF Analog Test Tool Validation Services Test house.

“The 2nd Certification Wave, scheduled for 2012, adds testing for the physical layer and selected upper level digital protocols, including RF analog and peer-to-peer.”

Nokia launches NFC Device Kit, kills Symbian but you can still invest

Nokia must have some Nokia C7 handsets kicking around that they want rid of because they have just started to offer them in an NFC Device Kit for Symbian. The irony of Nokia killing its development of the Symbian platform and the asking developers to develop NFC applications while it’s in its death throws isn’t lost on us or developers. But let’s assume it’s worth it to you to develop apps that will have no market in a year or two, let’s see what Espoo is offering.

Australian agency Adshel launches NFC marketing campaign with Coles

Australian ad agency, Adshel, launches NFC marketing campaign with Coles at 50 locations in Melbourne

The Melbourne based ad agency, Adshel, has got together with Coles supermarkets to deploy an out-of-home (OOH) NFC marketing campaign. From a shaky start with endless banking trials, Australia seems to be embracing NFC in a big way. Companies like Adshel and Tapit aren’t hurting the awareness campaign to educate Australians about the benefits of using NFC through NFC marketing. NFC marketing is one of exciting use cases for NFC and is arguably the glue that holds a lot of other services together, including NFC payments, loyalty, coupons and engaging content aggregation.

The Adshel campaign tied together WiFi and NFC and rolled it into a trial campaign with Coles Supermarkets. The ads were placed around Melbourne at 50 Adshel sites and offered exclusive Coles content. Consumers could get hold of the content, which featured Curtis Stone’s recipes and a video cookbook, by simply tapping their phone against the NFC posters or connecting to the localized WiFi network with their smartphones. The Adshel NFC marketing campaign showed the supermarket how recipes for that night’s meal could attract consumers to pick up their goods at Coles after interacting with NFC smartposters.

Quad/Graphics enters the NFC printing business

Quad/Graphics enters the NFC printing business and jumps on emerging mobile technologies, print media will never be the same

Quad/Graphics are getting into NFC printing and emerging mobile technologies that include the now old fashioned QR codes, Augmented Reality (AR), and our personal favorite, NFC based print products. Quad/Graphics has long held a position within the print media industry where it is known to marketers the world over. Quad/Graphics is a global provider of print and related multichannel solutions for consumer magazines, special interest publications, catalogs, retail inserts/circulars, direct mail, books, directories, commercial and specialty products, including in-store signage. In other words, when it comes in the print format Quad/Graphics more than likely has a few presses dedicated to it.

Isobar Create 48 NFC “Hackathon” winners announced, however, what’s clear is that NFC developers love beer Isobar Create 48 NFC “Hackathon” has happened and the results are in. We covered the Isobar Create 48 NFC “Hackathon” when it was announced, and now that the event has since come and gone, the winners have been announced. If you don’t know what the “Hackathon” was, feel free to check our last post on the event, or take it from us that it was like a Star Trek convention for NFC developers where they got together in Boston to create NFC apps that would be judged by their heroes from Google, Nokia, WHERE, Tieto and Isobar. In fact, it was better than a Star Trek convention because these particular developers and designers were fed and watered and put up for the night if they needed it.

The Isobar Create 48 NFC get together challenged participants to push the envelope with NFC and find creative uses for the technology. More than 40 designers and developers, produced nine working prototypes in 48 hours. Nokia, Google, Tieto, ICS, the MIT Enterprise Forum and NFC startup Tagstand were on hand to show examples of applications and demonstrated how to develop for NFC.

NFC peer-to-peer evolves with SNEP (Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol)

NFC device-to-device communication just got a whole lot easier with the NFC Forum’s new Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol (SNEP)

The NFC Forum has announced its 16th NFC specification called SNEP (Simple NDEF Exchange Protocol). We’ll save the technical information for later in the post and get straight to what this means for users before we worry about our resident geeks and developers. Quite simply, our NFC devices will be able to connect to each other and share information in a more seamless manner. The NFC Forum gave two use case scenarios which are as follows:

Who put the green in NFC? Tapit did in Australia

Who put the green in NFC? Tapit did in Australia

Tapit set out to prove that NFC was green in Australia and ran an NFC marketing campaign for an environmental recycling company. NFC is green, it’s just a fact that the technology negates the use and need for paper goods, and that some NFC tags are recyclable with a quick wave on a phone to add different data on board. NFC tags don’t even need to be “recycled” to be recycled. NFC Rumors did an article about one aspect of the green potential for NFC and we concentrated on the simple process of getting rid of paper receipts. We were shocked at how much paper it would save. You can see the post here, or check out our infographic here that has the information summarized. However, when you take into account brochures, paper coupons, direct mailers and those pesky receipts the green impact that NFC has really starts to add up.

NFC marketing comes out of thinaire with the NFC billboard

NFC marketing comes out of thinaire, marketing WILL never be the same

We posted about the thinaire NFC billboard last week and you, our readers, were inspired. We received a lot of visits and shares to the post and we could tell from emails we received how innovative you felt the NFC marketing campaign was. We love NFC marketing - its potentials are colossal and we expect to see NFC marketing rule supremely over out-of-home and print marketing in the coming years.

For the first time marketing has become a two way engagement between consumer and company. A true conversation can now happen between brands and their fans and word of mouth marketing truly is coming of age with a viral aspect that has never existed before.

Identive Group set to explode on the NFC scene: The Dave Holmes interview Part One

Today we got together with Dave Holmes of the Identive Group to talk NFC. Over the course of a few posts, we’ll let you in on how far the rabbit hole goes and the shear breadth of brain trust held within the firm. We will also look at how this in-depth knowledge translates into a pragmatic approach that the Identive Group is taking to the NFC world. In this new age of NFC ecosystems, services, products and innovation it is sometimes easy to forget that there are veterans of near field communications who walk among us mere mortals. One of those people that has practically been in NFC from day one is Identive Group’s VP, Dave Holmes.

The Identive Group is vast in the business models they service and products in which they are involved. However, much of the time the somewhat shy Identive Group likes to be that provider that works behind the scenes instead of front and center.

TI partner ViewAt develops low-cost, turnkey EPOS (electronic point-of-sale) NFC solutions

A Texas Instruments partner, ViewAt, has announced that it has released a turnkey EPOS NFC solution. Designers in the retail electronic transaction space can now quickly and easily develop cutting edge, portable point-of-sale applications that incorporate secure payment card processing including contactless near field communications (NFC) capabilities. When it comes to NFC these days and incorporating the technology into any system, the buzz word that leads to the best ROI, frees up the R&D budget, and speeds up time to market is modularity. Companies like ViewAT through semiconductor companies like Texas Instruments are devising new modular platforms that could arguably take on the “plug and play” moniker for system integrators wishing to add NFC to products.

“This new, low-cost, turnkey electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) solution from ViewAt, a Texas Instruments Incorporated partner, protects intellectual property and financial transactions while reducing development time for these latest retail transaction products by as much as a year.  Following a modular design approach, the EPOS solution provides flexibility to customers seeking to differentiate products.”

BlackBerry NFC issues end in sight NFC phone rumors [Exclusive]

An end may be in sight for BlackBerry users with NFC issues with an added bonus to come, exclusive NFC phone rumors

We have covered the problems with BlackBerry NFC phones probably more than any other site on the web. Of course, what has helped is that we have had multiple sources close to the situation that have given us exclusive information on the subject. If you have followed the news lately, you will already know that RIM hasn’t had an easy ride of things with declining demand for their products and sales plummeting in every market. But within dismal results RIM has forged relationships with HID, Isis and have arguably been every bit as active as Nokia in the realm of NFC. RIM is rumored to be readying their QNX operating system that will update BlackBerry phones so they can be competitive again, and we at NFC Rumors would like to see BlackBerry do well. That said, NFC has been the problem that BlackBerry just hasn’t been able to get to grips with, and today we have more exclusive information for you.

Microsoft Windows 8 NFC shown of by NXP and UPM RFID at the Build Conference

We have all heard about the Windows 8 NFC tablet and the new NFC facilities being built into Windows 8 for all manner of devices, but until now we haven’t really seen this in action. Our friends over at UPM RFID were kind enough to send us a link to a video they shot of that Samsung Windows 8 tablet in full NFC action, reading NFC tags, sharing websites and other content.

You will see in the video how the demonstration shows just how easily the Windows 8 table picks up the tags’ presence and then reads it with no trouble at all. NXP worked with Microsoft to get the NFC drivers up to speed for the Build Conference. By the looks of it, they aced the sharing and reading capabilities in the Samsung Windows 8 NFC tablet.

The audio is a little ropey at times, but it does get better as the video plays so please bear with it.

Nokia N9 NFC phone starts shipping, fails to say where

Nokia has finally started shipping its Nokia N9 NFC smartphone around the world. In a press release today Nokia confirmed that the Nokia N9 will be in consumers’ hands imminently, but failed to say which markets would see the Nokia N9 and which carriers would be selling the first and last Nokia Meego device.

“Since we announced the Nokia N9 in June this year, the feedback that it has gotten from discerning and avid smartphone users across the world has been nothing short of fantastic,” said Ilari Nurmi, Vice President of Marketing at Nokia. “With the innovations in industrial design, user interface, and the Qt developer experience, the Nokia N9 sets the bar for how natural technology can feel, and represents the first in a number of products from Nokia that will be brought to life in similar fashion.”

Isis announces NFC phone allies for the looming wallet wars

Isis announces HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile, Sony Ericsson and DeviceFidelity as NFC phone allies for the looming wallet wars

Isis today announced that HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile, Sony Ericsson and DeviceFidelity have committed to supporting the upcoming mobile wallet provider with NFC phones. For a service that won’t even open the doors until as late as the middle of next year, Isis is certainly making a lot of noise about its as yet non-existent service. We very much view this announcement as an obvious non-news statement to detract attention from Google Wallet. Of course, these OEM handset manufacturers are going to produce NFC phones that use SIM based NFC. They wouldn’t want to cut out the ability to get on to Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile USA’s networks. However, there are a few interesting aspects of this news that we will go into later in this post.

Google Wallet predicament NFC Rumors exclusive

Although Google Wallet is out in the open and available to some, the details on how Google Wallet is building out have been shrouded in mystery. Well, that is until today. NFC Rumors has received  information from a source who is close to the matter who revealed some details Google and others would have preferred you didn’t know.

The Google Wallet roll out predicament

Google Wallet released last week to the general public with a specific Android update pushed to Sprint Nexus S 4G customers that enabled the Google Wallet and Secure Element for the first time. However, executives within Google are said to be releasing that they are going to have to spend some money to market the nascent NFC mobile wallet to attract more attention.

Remote payments will grow to US $22.5 billion by 2014, more than NFC?

A white paper from Vesta Corporation claims remote payments will grow to US $22.5 billion by 2014, which will create more opportunity than NFC payments Remote payments to drive USD $22.5 billion m-commerce market, white paper outlines how remote payments, not NFC, will provide lucrative opportunities for mobile operators

Add another NFC / mobile payments report to the pile. A study that was commissioned by Vesta Corporation and carried out by Informa finds that there is more opportunity in remote payments (read remittance payments) than NFC for MNOs. We wrote a article on remittance payments which can be found here. Our research for that article found a huge potential for remittance payments, or remote payments as this white paper terms it, but it did not outshine NFC payments or NFC mobile wallet projected usage that other research firms have found. This new Vesta Corporation white paper projects that there will be $22.5 billion in remote transactions by 2014, while projections from other research firms see NFC mobile wallet transactions topping $1 trillion by 2015.

Sprint to give away Nexus S 4G to devs at NFC Open Solutions Conference

NFC gets another boost today as Sprint announces its 11th annual Open Solutions Conference and it’s all about near field communication. Let’s get the giveaway details done first. Sprint and Samsung are giving away a free  ”Nexus S™ 4G from Google™” to the first 1500 developers that register for the event. They will also be giving one month of free service for those NFC smartphones too. It would have been nice to see a Nexus Prime 4G from Google, but the Nexus S is nothing to turn your nose up at. What’s more interesting than the giveaway though is the point of the conference and the nature of its content. In short the Open Solutions Conference that will be held in Santa Clara, California is all about developing NFC applications that will work on the Sprint network. Registration is now open here. If you were wondering if Google is involved in this developer conference, the answer would be an emphatic yes.

NFC Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE & Samsung Galaxy S II LTE announced for Korean market

Samsung isn’t finished putting out NFC Samsung Galaxy S II handsets yet, and today it announced the Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE and Samsung Galaxy S II LTE for its native Korean market. So we will finally see the Samsung Galaxy S II surf the LTE waves in Korea at least. Okay, on with the Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE and Samsung Galaxy S II LTE details.

Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE NFC phone

So you want all the gory details? Good, let’s start with the star of the show - the Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE. Not content with the paltry 4.5-inch display found on the T-Mobile version of the superphone, Samsung decided the Super AMOLED HD display needed a little je ne sais quoi and slapped on a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD screen that puts out gorgeous images and video at 316 ppi, or 1280 x 720 for all you lateral thinkers.

Gilbarco wants you to pay for gas (petrol) with NFC mobile wallet

Gas stations are set to embrace NFC payments through mobile wallets if Gilbarco gets their way. If you are not involved in the refined oil industry you may have never heard of Gilbarco Veeder-Root. Think of them as the Verifone of the gas forecourt because they manufacture and supply POS terminals and gas pumps. Gilbarco are, however, well known in the petrol industry and supply to 19 of the top 20 convenience store operators in the U.S. This year at the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) Show the company intends to show off their latest innovations that are based around NFC mobile wallet payments, which it feels will revolutionize the customer experience at the gas pump or in the convenience store you.

NFC getting too hot for you? ATI helps you monitor it with it’s LOG-IC Android app

No, not that ATI - we mean American Thermal Instruments and their LOG-IC NFC data logger Android app that measures temperature, of course. ATI outed their new Android app based tool at the IQPC Cold Chain Conference in Philadelphia, where the company demonstrated the LOG-IC NFC app on the legendary Google Nexus S NFC smartphone. ATI’s LOG-IC NFC data logger scans, reviews, and communicates real-time temperature monitoring data. ATI says that this app is the first in the cold chain industry to provide fully functional end-to-end temperature monitoring in real-time.

Broadcom unleashes its first BCM2079x NFC chips

Broadcom outs its first BCM2079x NFC chips in 40 NM that brings connectivity to Bluetooth and WiFi

Broadcom has announced that its first NFC chips are ready to roll in a 40 NM flavor. We are pretty excited about Broadcom’s announcement because its NFC chips represent an evolution that is already taking place in near field communications hardware. The BCM2079x is the first near field communications (NFC) chip to be manufactured in 40 NM CMOS process which allows for a smaller size and subsequent power consumption, the company explains. In fact, Broadcom goes on to explain that these new NFC chips are an industry first.

NFC news roundup

Its been a busy couple of weeks in NFC and odds are you have probably missed some of the good bits if you don’t hang out on NFC Rumors all day everyday. So we thought we’d catalogue some of the more interesting stories that have crept up in the last two weeks and organize a little.

NFC Marketing

NFC marketing used to be a small category of news, but it is building. We expect that in the future it will rival NFC phones in the amount of stories that are generated by NFC marketing because it is such a diverse subject.

Top 11 reasons why you shouldn't buy a phone without NFC

Top 11 reasons why you shouldn’t buy a phone without NFC

NFC has reached a point where its inclusion in everyday life is a certainty within the next couple of years, and for consumers to benefit from NFC features they will need an NFC phone. Whether your penchant is for NFC payments or you like the Bluetooth pairing to speakers, near field communication is coming. Within the next year or so, we expect NFC keys to cards starting to become popular. Also expect NFC features built straight into our cars. Smartphone manufacturers are already starting to produce NFC phones and they are becoming more prevalent by the day, but there are still going to be non NFC-phones marketed to consumers. This post is about why you shouldn’t tie yourself into a contract on a phone that doesn’t come with the aforementioned capabilities.

Companies like Microsoft, Google, Intel, Nokia, Research in Motion, Huawei, Acer and Mozilla have said they intend to support NFC in products from now on. Service companies like Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, Rogers Communications and many more are building their businesses around the model of harnessing near field communications for their customers. However, the big “will they, won’t they?” question lays with the Apple iPhone 5.

Fiserv gets ready for NFC, produces personalized EMV cards for now

Fiserv, the financial services technology solutions firm, has started to produce personalized EMV cards and is helping to prepare the infrastructure for NFC to follow in its footsteps. Based around a very similar concept as NFC payments, the EMV card (which stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa standard) uses contactless technology to make payments. When a consumer goes to make a payment at a contactless POS terminal they must first put in their PIN number and then wave their card across the reader.

“As the U.S. payments industry looks for ways to minimize card-related fraud loss and comply with new data security standards, EMV provides a next-generation alternative to magnetic stripe bank cards,” said Jorge Diaz, President of Output Solutions at Fiserv.

Yale NFC door locks caught on video

Yale NFC door locks caught on video We covered the Yale story when the company made the announcement that it had developed NFC door locks earlier this month. At the time we had questions about how the system worked and backup considerations and appealed for anyone who was heading to the CEDIA Expo to grab some video and photographs of the Yale NFC door locks in use. It turns out that CEPro did just that and turned up some extra details on the NFC door locks too.

Ever since that fateful day, when shampoo met conditioner in a single bottle we humans have been fascinated by the efficiency of converging things. We want to save time, save energy and save space and NFC looks to add a whole lot of convergence to our lives, including chucking out the keys and using our NFC phones to gain access to our homes via NFC door locks.

KT launches iCarte NFC iPhone case in Korea, backs it up with the Olleh Touch NFC mobile wallet

The iPhone 5 may or may not get NFC this fall, but that won’t stop Koreans making NFC payments with an iPhone because KT has launched an iPhone 4 NFC iCarte 420k case. Not only has KT launched a near field communication enabled case for the iPhone 4, but it has done so with the approval of Apple under the “Made for iPhone” accreditation. The iPhone 4 case was developed by Canadian firm Wireless Dynamics Inc., and enables the use of transport cards and credit cards using near field communication while protecting the iPhone in its secondary function as a case.

Does Google want to become an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator)?

Does Google want to become a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator)?

It appears that Google is testing its own SIM cards in Spain. This points to the possibility that Google could be getting into the MNVO business. The Spanish website El Otrolado has outed some photographs of Google SIMs, which could mean El Goog is going to become an MVNO. A mobile virtual network operator is a service that runs over another carrier’s network but is branded and managed by somebody like Google. A perfect example of an MVNO would be Virgin Mobile, which is available in many countries around the world and never runs its own network and instead piggybacks on local operators airwaves.

This is a curious move for the company that recently worried Android handset partners with the acquisition of Motorola’s mobility business that would create an enclosed ecosystem. Google would effectively have control of everything from the operating system (Android), to the smartphones (Motorola) all the way through the network and then let’s not forget NFC payments with Google Wallet. The photographs you will see below illustrate that Google is doing something with SIM cards that are reputedly being shipped to Google Spain employees.

MasterCard talks up security in NFC payments

MasterCard talks up security in NFC payments

MasterCard has been talking about the security involved in NFC mobile wallets, initially with the Google Wallet and then on the grander scale of the PayPass system itself. Poll after poll has shown that consumers are worried about security when it comes to NFC payments, whether that comes in the form of an NFC mobile wallet or an EMV card. Consumers are right to be concerned about the security of a nascent payment method and they are right to seek education on safety systems that are applied to any payment forms. Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.

We have discussed before on NFC Rumors that NFC payments are probably more secure than any form of currency or payment that has come before. Does that mean NFC payments are infallible? No, but the point of security is to make it sufficiently difficult that no one would bother attempting to steal a few bucks from an account.

America's Isis crisis in NFC mobile payments

America’s Isis crisis in NFC mobile payments

Since Google launched its Google Wallet earlier this week the Isis crew have been out in full force talking about Isis, which probably won’t get to market until in Salt Lake City and Austin until early-mid 2012, and that is  just in a couple of test cities at that. If you have never heard of Isis let us give you some back story. Isis is a joint venture formed by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon where the three mobile network operators have come together to go into the NFC mobile payments business together, effectively controlling most of the market in the United States. Each mobile network operator intends to charge companies for having an NFC payments capable app stored on a subscriber’s phone and then Isis will act as a trusted service manager that provisions security apps being installed and acts as part of the payment process. If you would like to know more about what a trusted service manager is and does, check out our post here.

Consumers have smartphone security concerns but don't install security apps as NFC payments arrive

A NPD Group study suggests that consumers are not managing smartphone security as NFC payments arrive

NPD Group found that people are worried about security but do very little about it when it comes to smartphones - we wonder will it still be the same for NFC phones? Google Wallet just launched, but there are still people out there who are concerned about the security of NFC mobile wallets and NFC payments. A new report out today from the market research firm NPD Group reveals some concerning facts and figures about just how many people are taking action to protect their sensitive data housed on smartphones. The irony is that nearly 40% of all smartphone users are concerned about threats such as activity monitoring, hacking, and credit-card security, and viruses, while more than 33% are worried about harmful apps, malicious emails, and the potential for user-location tracking.

Samsung SHV-E120L NFC phone outed, dropping down in Korea this month

Another day, another NFC phone rears its head and this time it’s the Samsung SHV-E120L that has caught our eye. The team over at PocketNow spotted a post on a Korean website with specifications for the Samsung SHV-E120L NFC phone a couple of days ago. This new phone eerily echoes the specs of the LG LU6200 NFC phone and appears to be geared up to compete on a mano-y-mano basis. Samsung is finally embracing NFC in more and more models and the Samsung SHV-E120L is no exception. As more and more handset manufacturers are committing to NFC phones Samsung appears to becoming more competitive in every market segment and doesn’t look like it’s about to give any advantage away to competitors.

STMicroelectronics supports NFC in Windows 8

STMicroelectronics supports NFC in Windows 8

When Microsoft announced that Windows 8 would support NFC it wasn’t really surprising to hear that much of the existing industry would rally to support Windows 8, and today you can add STMicroelectronics to that list. In fact, STMicroelectronics has worked with Microsoft to enable ST’s NFC solution support for the upcoming Windows 8 operating system.

Windows 8 support for NFC has taken NFC out from the cold and thrust it in the lime light. The question we hear now is not if will NFC take off, but when it will be available in PCs and consumer electronics.
