This is part two of our coverage of the GSMA Mobile World Live NFC webinar where we will focus on Alan Baldwin of Samsung and Stephen Upstone of Velti. We have broken these posts up because they are pretty in-depth and we didn’t want you to miss a thing.
Alan Baldwin heads up Samsung’s Technology Innovation Group which helps define a global roadmap for Samsung’s Mobile R&D teams. Talk about a dream job! So as you would expect on the hardware / software side of things he knows a few thing or two about NFC and shared some really interesting observations of threats and weaknesses for Near Field Communications. Baldwin started off by highlighting some basics about NFC including transmission range (<4cm) and the fact the technology uses magnetic induction with loop antennas. If you are in the industry you would have probably already known that and if you are not you probably don’t care. He pointed out that NFC supports both passive and active tag types and that the NFC standard has low data rates by today’s standards.
